Hannah Blythyn, Member of the Senedd for Delyn, is inviting young people in Flintshire to apply to have their voice heard in the Welsh Youth Parliament. Applications for election to the body open on the 5th July, for all young people in Wales aged between 11-17.

60 young people from across Wales will be elected as Youth Parliament members – voted for by their peers and partner organisations. If successfully elected to the youth parliament, young people will have the opportunity to debate, speak out on and raise key issues that they care about.

Members of the youth parliament will be given a number of responsibilities including: engaging with young people in their area, speaking up on key issues, attending events and media opportunities and discussing issues with Senedd Members and the Welsh Government. The Senedd will cover all reasonable costs related to Welsh Youth Parliament Member’s duties such as travel and accommodation.

Hannah Blythyn MS said:

“When I was growing up in Flintshire, I never saw myself as a future politician. Now it is the privilege of my life to represent the area I grew up in, every day in the Senedd.

I would encourage all young people in the local area to apply – as you have the chance to make your voice heard as an elected member in the Senedd with the power to bring about change. If there is an issue you care about greatly – from climate change, to mental health, to education – take this great opportunity to play your part”.

Young people can register to stand for the Welsh Youth Parliament between the 5th July and the 20th September. The election of Candidates will take place in November, with the results being announced in December 2021.

Mark Drakeford MS, First Minister, said:

“This is a great example of how we can strengthen our democracy by including young people in our discussions – you have a unique viewpoint which deserves to be heard and considered”.
