Hannah Blythyn MS welcomes £1 bus fares for 5-15 year-olds across Wales

PRESS RELEASE

Local Member of the Senedd Hannah Blythyn has welcomed the Welsh Labour Government’s decision to extend its popular £1 bus fare scheme to include children aged five to 15 across Wales.

From the start of November, young people can travel for just £1 per single journey or £3 for a day ticket, making it cheaper and easier for families to get around.

The move builds on the success of the £1 fares introduced for 16 to 21-year-olds earlier this autumn. The scheme has already enabled nearly a quarter of a million discounted journeys for young people.

Unlike older passengers, five to 15-year-olds won’t need to apply for a MyTravelPass to benefit from the reduced fares.

Hannah Blythyn MS, who has long championed affordable and accessible public transport, said:

“This is another really positive step from our Welsh Labour Government, one that will make a real difference to families here in Delyn and across Wales.

"Making it easier for younger people to get to and from places locally is an issue that was raised by students from across the county at my annual Democracy In Action Day, so it’s great to see further action towards fairer public transport that will make a real difference for children and young people.”

The £1 bus fare scheme is part of the Welsh Government’s commitment to a fairer, stronger and greener Wales, supporting people with the cost of living while reducing carbon emissions and keeping local communities connected.

Not only will the expanded scheme help young people travel across our community, whether that’s to school, after-school clubs, sports or to spend time with friends and family, it will also help parents and carers save money.

Hannah Blythyn MS continued:

“Transport costs shouldn’t be a barrier to opportunity or connection. This scheme is another way we’re putting fairness at the heart of our communities and helping people make greener travel choices.

"Bus travel is vital for our corner of Wales, it’s a lifeline that connects our towns and villages, helps young people get to school or college, supports local businesses and keeps our communities linked together. Investing in local transport is about investing in people and places, ensuring no one is left behind.”
