More students could access £40 a week via the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)

10/03/2026

Local Labour MS, Hannah Blythyn, has welcomed the news that 1,500 more students across Wales are set to benefit from the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), as eligibility is extended this year.

Over 18,000 students currently claim EMA in Wales- a grant designed to support students between the ages of 16-18 whose household income is below a certain amount.

Wales already has the most generous offer in the UK, with the Tory Government scrapping the grant for England in 2011, and Scotland and Northern Ireland offering students less money.

The EMA helps young people pay for costs such as travel, meals, and study materials. It is designed to remove financial barriers to enable young people to continue their education. Currently over 18,000 students in Wales receive EMA.

From September 2026, income thresholds for households with one dependent will rise from £23,400 to £24,570, and from £25,974 to £27,273 for households with two or more dependents.

The latest decision from the Welsh Labour Government to extend EMA eligibility will mean more young people can receive weekly support from September.

Hannah Blythyn MS said:

“The Welsh EMA is breaking down barriers for learners across the constituency. Everybody deserves an equal opportunity to access education and providing £40 a week to those eligible is one of the ways in which the Welsh Labour Government is making this a reality.

“Since 2020, almost three and a half thousand learners across Flintshire and Denbighshire have claimed their EMA. At £40 at week, Welsh Labour delivers the most generous offer in the UK. I know this money makes a real difference for students and their families with the cost of living.

“And, of course, the Welsh Labour Government’s £1 bus fare scheme for young people is helping to make the EMA go even further for families across North Wales.

“I would urge all 16-18 year olds and their families to take a few minutes to check if they qualify for support.”

Learners can check their eligibility and apply on the Student Finance Wales website, or speak to their school or college for help with their application.

First Minister Eluned Morgan said:

“Going on to sixth form or college can provide young people with life-changing experiences – this support can be the difference which enables a young person to do that. I’m proud that we’ve not only kept EMA in Wales but made it more generous, helping thousands more young people pursue training courses and education which work for them.

“I want every young person to have the same opportunities to learn, to build their skills and build their confidence. This is not only good for the individuals, it’s good for business, providing the skilled workforce we need to help our economy to grow.”

Applications for the new EMA offer will be open on April 27th 2026. To check whether you are eligible and to apply for EMA,  visit the Student Finance Wales website, or speak to your school or college.
