During this week’s First Minister’s Questions in the Senedd, Hannah Blythyn MS raised the importance of improving road infrastructure in North Wales, with a focus on the A55.

Reflecting on its evolution, Hannah Blythyn recounted her own experiences from before the A55 was constructed and set out the road’s role as a “gateway into North Wales” and a critical part of the region’s economic and social fabric, providing an essential transport link for residents, visitors, and businesses.

Speaking at FMQs, the Delyn MS said:

“The A55 is more than just a road—it’s critical for communities and businesses across North Wales. While we’ve come a long way since the days of endless traffic jams through Conwy, it’s clear that further improvements are needed to address congestion, enhance safety, and future-proof this vital route.”

Hannah urged the Welsh Government to work collaboratively with the UK Government and local decision-makers to deliver practical and innovative improvements to the A55, such as a crawler lane westbound around Halkyn and measures to mitigate accidents as well as alleviating the knock-on impact of breakdowns.

In response, First Minister Eluned Morgan MS praised Hannah Blythyn’s commitment to representing her community’s transport priorities and said:

“There are still pinch points on the A55 that need to be addressed, and the Welsh Government is committed to taking a strategic approach to tackle these challenges.

Through the development of regional transport plans, we will ensure joined-up working at a regional level, bringing together corporate joint committees and technical advice officials to deliver solutions that align with the Wales Transport Strategy.

This collaborative effort will help us provide the support needed to improve transport infrastructure across North Wales.”

The Member of the Senedd for Delyn, Hannah Blythyn, added:

I’m encouraged by the First Minister’s recognition of these issues and will continue to push for practical and innovative solutions that benefit everyone in North Wales.”
